Curriculum & Progression

The Design Technology progression documents have been created to ensure that in-depth progressive steps are taught over time to enable pupils to meet the end of Key Stage Attainment Targets of the National Curriculum.

Each area of progressive statements have been designed to provide guidance as to what teaching and learning will be covered within particular year groups and key stages as well as ensure that key concepts, skills and vocabulary are embedded across the school. These incremental learning steps will continue to build on and broaden children’s knowledge and understanding of our creative, designed world.

In Design Technology, the curriculum programme of study is has been broken down and structured into discrete areas: design, make, evaluate, technical knowledge and cooking and nutrition. To support the teaching of a broad, rich DT curriculum, we have invested in project pages by the DT Association. These project pages support and guide the teaching and learning of specific skills, build on knowledge and help our children to achieve a planned end product.

Within each section, there are parts which begin with a recap of the previous year’s learning, so children are able to re-engage and recap practical skills. Wherever possible, the teaching of these objectives are embedded into creative cross-curricular topics, but through necessity some areas of Design Technology are taught discretely in order to provide pupil’s with the most relevant learning experience.

In Early Years, our children begin to develop the essential building blocks of Design Technology. They carry out opportunities to design and make. They build and construct with purpose, use simple tools and techniques as well as develop basic cooking skills.

In KS1, children experience designing and making of mechanisms, textiles and food based activities. This enables all children to engage and use their developing vocabulary in an appropriate context. Ideas linked to current local and national events encourage the children to recognise the influence of Design Technology within society and the world we live in.

In KS2, children continue to develop their understanding of Design Technology vocabulary building of what they have learnt before. They are expected to develop ownership of their learning using skills taught in previous year groups.
