All the way to Everest!

Posted February 9th, 2018

Reid Street pupils were fascinated to hear from mountaineer Steve Graham in a recent assembly. He told them all about the mountains he has climbed in his ‘seven summit’ challenge. Pupils were amazed to hear about the -80 degree temperatures and 200 mile an hour winds he may experience during his next climb – Mount Everest. He brought some of the clothing and equipment he will need to survive and everyone enjoyed seeing Mr Banks dressed up as a mountaineer. At the end of the week, all pupils took part in their own ‘climb’ doing the same amount of steps each that Steve will need to get to the top of the world’s highest mountain. This was a sponsored event and will raise essential funds for St Teresa’s Hospice. A BIG thank you to Morrisons, who have agreed to match fund money raised by Mrs Appleby.

R.E Day

Posted February 9th, 2018

Today we found out about the work of Christian Aid. We made our own houses and created our own town. Everyone had their own house. Unfortunately, the River Reid which flows through our town, flooded and burst it’s banks. This left some people with nowhere to live. We became Transformers and thought about different ways to help them.

Puppet Workshop

Posted February 6th, 2018

Today we worked with a real puppeteer to make special puppets out of recycled materials. We love our puppets!

Share a Story

Posted February 2nd, 2018

On Friday 2nd February the Reception children enjoyed ‘sharing a story’ with their parents. The afternoon was well supported by parents and other family members. The children loved baking gingerbread men and preparing for the afternoon! The children sang loudly and clearly, there was dancing and acting too! The children were very excited to hear all the positive comments that their parents had written. We are looking forward to our next ‘stay and play’ session before the Easter break!

Hippodrome

Posted January 24th, 2018

The year 6 children went to visit the newly refurbished Hippodrome in Darlington. Children had the opportunity to look backstage, visit the dressing rooms and learn the history behind the theatre. We were very lucky to have a full tour of the Hippodrome and the children even got to go on stage!

Brass Band at Longfield School

Posted January 19th, 2018

On Tuesday 19th December, the brass band went to Longfield School in Darlington to perform a selection of songs for visitors and staff at the school. This was a fantastic opportunity for children to meet staff at the secondary school and become familiar with the school for future transitions.

Snow!

Year 2 had fun in the snow on Thursday. During a numeracy lesson working on symmetry, we decided to try and build a symmetrical snowman.

The Jolly Postman

Posted January 15th, 2018

Today the Jolly Postman went to deliver his letters to different Fairy tale characters.  We played “Who lives in a house like this?” by guessing the characters from clues left outside each house and read the post which had been delivered.

Goldilocks

Posted January 8th, 2018

On Monday something strange happened in Reception. When the children came back from lunch somebody had been in the classroom! A chair was broken and there was an empty bowl left on the floor with a spoon and a little porridge on the carpet. After much searching for clues with magnifying glasses we found a finger print and a golden curly wig! Could Goldilocks have been to visit us? …..

Darker nights

Posted December 15th, 2017

Today, the children learned about how the amount of daylight changes depending on the season. They learned that in the winter the days are shorter and that it can start getting dark when they leave school on an afternoon. They were introduced to reflective materials and thought about jobs that need high visibility clothing to keep them safe. These included: policemen and women, firefighters and construction workers. The children then designed their own reflective headbands to keep them safe on the way to and from school and tested them using a torch.
